Abstract: This study analyses enablers and barriers or pull and push factors that motivate women to become entrepreneurs in Turkey from a gender perspective. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 20 women entrepreneurs in Turkey. Analysis of the interviews revealed that push factors played a more significant role than pull factors and that the quest for independence influences women entrepreneurs' decisions. Finding capital is a significant obstacle despite governmental and non-governmental support mechanisms available to them. The major limitation of this exploratory study is low generalisability. Literature on motivational factors of women's entrepreneurship in Turkey is scant, and this study fills this gap by exploring the push and pull factors that motivate women's entrepreneurship in Turkey. The study provides valuable recommendations for policymakers and entrepreneurs.
