Inventory of carbon sequestration capacity of low-altitude habitats in Taiwan

Abstract: This study compiled published literature to assess carbon sequestration in 13 low-altitude habitats in Taiwan. Habitats with vascular plants exhibit higher carbon sequestration, including bamboo forests (-2.57~14.52 Mg C ha-1 yr-1), mangroves (-3.83~196.92 Mg C ha-1 yr-1) and freshwater marshes (0.53~34.82 Mg C ha-1 yr-1). Conversely, aquatic habitats exhibit lower or negative carbon sequestration potential, such as lakes (-0.093~0.888 Mg C ha-1 yr-1) and ponds (-2.44~-0.96 Mg C ha-1 yr-1). Accurately determining distribution areas and carbon sequestration coefficients for these diverse habitats becomes pivotal in mitigating uncertainties when estimating the nationally determined contributions for low-altitude regions in Taiwan. This becomes an integral component in the roadmap to achieve the 2050 net-zero carbon emission target, while concurrently serving as a nature-based solution to protect the biodiversity and carbon sinks of low-altitude areas.
