Abstract: In this paper, a numerical solver for the computation of dam breach problems is developed and presented. The flow is modelled by shallow water equations considering an incompressible fluid flow and numerically solved by means of the finite element method (FEM). For a temporal solution, the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme is used, introducing modifications in the advective term. A linear triangular element is considered for space interpolation on unstructured meshes thus allowing representation of complex geometries. The numerical simulation of dam breach problems encompass some numerical difficulties such as the propagation of discontinuities on the flow and unsteady effects, which are handled by the presented method considering an artificial diffusion term. Studies are ongoing presenting a dam breach problem considering four different failure cases. The total failure case is compared with experimental data validating the methodology. Further failure investigations are presented comparing the differences in flow dynamics related to the total breach case.
