The innovation infrastructure in Serbia as the driving force for the development and restructuring of the country's S&T landscape

Abstract: Transitional changes in the Western Balkan Countries (WBCs) have changed the economic and social landscape in the region. The Research and Development (R&D) sector, being highly vulnerable and amenable to the brain drain phenomenon, mostly belongs to an unintentional sort of transition. The paper explores the main consequences of transitional changes in the R&D sector in Serbia, which are partly oriented towards the creation of an innovation infrastructure in the country. The article concludes with an analysis of the process of creating these infrastructures and a mostly qualitative analysis of the effectiveness of the innovation infrastructure in Serbia. The concluding remarks in this articles are optimistic: public awareness and public acceptance concerning the necessity and usefulness of innovation infrastructures for economic development in Serbia are rising; political as well as financial support is larger every year; the number of people with innovative ideas and solutions is rapidly increasing; and the R&D sector has been integrated into the Science and Technology and Innovation (S&T&I) system.
