Abstract: The current paper discusses a Finite Element Model (FEM) simulation and analysis of orthogonal cutting of common engineering materials using cemented tungsten carbide and single crystal alumina cutting tools. FEM machining simulations using a Lagrangian finite element-based machining model was applied to predict temperature, heat generation, pressure and maximum principal stress. The purpose of the study is to investigate how single crystal alumina cutting tools affect the conditions of machining some common engineering materials, especially the generation of chips, the conditions at the chip root and the influence of frictional interactions on the rake face of the cutting tool.
