Abstract: This study presents an integral model suitable to simulate confined swirled flames of technical interest. The influence of a variety of boundary conditions such as enclosure, reaction rates and swirl number variations on the turbulent flow and scalar fields has been investigated. This complete model is validated by comparing simulation results and appropriate experimental data. Different turbulence models are considered and discussed with regard to their performance for describing confined swirling flows. To account for chemical reactions, reduced mechanisms such as the ILDM-method or the laminar flamelet concept are used and compared. Turbulence-chemistry interaction is modelled using PDF approaches. Results of Monte Carlo scalar PDF and of presumed Beta-PDFs are also compared to experimental data.
