Analytical investigation of an on-road in-pit heavy traffic situation

Abstract: The paper considers the problem of an on-road in-pit heavy traffic situation that might occur during the operation of a shovel-truck system. During their travel, trucks encounter other pieces of haulage frequently that can affect the truck's performance. It is a well-known fact that by increasing the number of trucks in the system, the productivity of the truck system grows. However, this only works to a certain degree because when many haulers circulate in a given pit, they might start to interfere with one another, and the system's productivity begins to decrease. The authors present an approach how to analyse such a situation by applying the Sivazlian and Wang queuing model. An example is given illustrating the theoretical treatise.
