Abstract: The hydration and nitridation behaviour of Al powders before and after coated by Al2O3 gel were investigated. The results show: 1) the amount of hydrated product Al(OH)3 for uncoated Al powder increases with hydration time; 2) there is practically no hydrated product Al(OH)3 for coated Al powders at 80°C for 12 hrs indicating the hydration resistance of Al powder can be avoided by Al2O3 sol-gel coated method, which is due to the formed Al2O3 gel coatings were continuous and dense on the surface of Al powder retarding Al reacts with water; 3) there is no influencing of Al2O3 sol-gel coated on the reaction behaviour of Al powder in N2 atmosphere, which is due to the decomposition of Al2O3 gel coatings providing channels for N2 reacts with aluminium powder at high temperatures.
