Abstract: The recovery of vehicle braking energy through an on-board regenerative system with energy storage has been well demonstrated experimentally. Energy normally dissipated in brakes is directed by a power transmission system to the energy store. That energy is held until required again by the vehicle. This paper examines the effect of regenerative systems and the fuel economy of a vehicle over the urban driving schedule. The effects of vehicle mass, regenerative system efficiency, storage size and power rating are investigated using a numerical simulation procedure.
