Abstract: For this study, a reliable measurement system of piston assembly frictional force was constructed. This not only requires smaller installation space than the existing so-called 'movable bore system', but also reduces errors induced by piston thrust and slap impulse. The present system is an improvement over the original because the top of the movable bore is detachable, enabling easy piston removal without touching the crankshaft. This system evaluated the effects of engine speed, oil viscosity, engine load, and the elastic contact pressure of piston rings on piston frictional force. Proportions of friction forces generated by each member of the piston assembly were also measured.
