Abstract: Co-doped TiO2 nanowires with doping concentrations ranging from 0 at.% to 5 at.% were synthesised by a simple and low cost solvothermal method and their photocatalytic activities were investigated. The nanowires had a single-crystalline structure and grew along the <001> zone-axis rutile phase. The Co-doped TiO2 nanowires showed a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light irradiation compared to the undoped TiO2 nanowires. This result can be attributed to the reduced bandgap energy and the inhibited charge recombination due to the incorporation of Co into TiO2 matrix. Both UV and visible light photocatalytic efficiency shows a maximum at a Co doping concentration of 2 at.%.
