Abstract: The existence of harmonics in any power system is increasingly drawing attention due to wide applications of power electronic devices. These harmonics are not desirable because they degrade power quality and lead to stability problems. In inverter fed drives, due to presence of harmonics produce pulsating torque and give rise to jerky motion of the motor. Traditional Kalman filter model shows some limitations in noisy environment. However, extended Kalman filter is a superior alternative to linear Kalman filter and more effective in tracking these harmonics in the presence of noisy data. In this paper, a model of Kalman filter is used for harmonic estimation in 'VSI-fed induction motor drives' and the validity of simulation results was compared using an extended Kalman filter. The results show that the proposed extended Kalman filter (EKF) is a robust and accurate method of measurement of harmonic amplitudes and phase angles for the time-varying power signals.
